PACKAGING:

When the entry form is released and you fill it out, please note the rules about dividing, labeling and packaging entries for each category. Do NOT label your individual jars or bags, as judging is conducted blind and removing these labels creates more work for us. To recap, your SMALLER containers must not be labeled – they must be stored in a larger bag or container and you must label your OUTSIDE container with:
** Strain/product name
** Your name and/or company
** Category / Subcategory

We will have jars and other standard issue containers for you to put your material in (for flower and concentrates categories only). Pick them up for free at Heady Burlington offices, or just pay shipping if you can’t make it in person. Sample kits will be available for free in our store soon.

FLOWER: Please separate your one ounce (28-grams) entry into sixteen (16) 1-gram increments and three (3) 4-gram increments. The 1-gram samples for your entry must be placed in our standard issue jars/bags, and these smaller containers may be placed in one larger bag, tupperware container, or equivalent package. Your OUTSIDE container may be labeled with your identifying information (name, etc).

CONCENTRATES: Please separate your 3.5-gram entry into seven (7) ½-gram increments. The ½-gram samples for your entry must be placed in our standard issue jars, and these smaller containers may be placed in one larger bag, tupperware container, or equivalent package. Your OUTSIDE container may be labeled.

EDIBLES: We require 15 individually packaged samples, each equaling one serving size, for entries in the Edibles category. We ask that if your edible requires refrigeration, that you bring it in a cooler. Your containers must follow our edibles labeling guidelines. They must also be stored in a larger bag or container and you may label your OUTSIDE container. If you sign up for this category, we will send more information on the dosage labeling and packaging specifics.

TOPICALS: We require 15 individually packaged serving size samples for entries in the Topicals category. Your containers must follow our edibles labeling guidelines, and they must be stored in a larger bag or container – you may label your OUTSIDE container with your identifying information.

What are the dates for The Headies?

Signup is open now via the Competitor Signup tab above. The form closes on October 31.

Competitor Drop-off and Registration will be early December. We will have dropoff locations in both Northern and Southern Vermont.

Judges can pick up their judging passes the week after Sunday, December 2 (more info on how/where ASAP). Judging ends December 29.

The Headies Awards Party takes place on Saturday, January 11, 2020.

How do I enter the Headies?

The online signup form is now CLOSED. The fee is $100 per entry, due at Drop-off. If you haven’t had a chance to sign up and are interested, email us.

Later in November, we’ll contact all competitors with Drop-off details, including location.

What do I get when I enter?

All competitors will receive a lab report with a full cannabinoid profile from our Testing Sponsor, photography of their entry, swag bag and access to The Headies Afterparty and Awards Celebration.

When and where can I drop off my entry?

Drop-off for Northern Vermont will be in early December in Chittenden County. Date/location TBD.

Drop-off for Southern Vermont will be in early December in Southern Vermont. Date/location TBD.

Competitors will be notified of precise locations for both dropoff spots by November.

Why does it cost $100 per entry?

Believe us, we’d love to do this for free. However, there are built-in costs which actively support The Headies being honest, professional, fair, and fabulous. The breakdown on a $100 entry fee looks something like this:

  • $50 – testing costs
  • $20 – administrative handling and labor
  • $15 – professional photography of your entry
  • $10 – packaging (bags for each entry, boxes, labels)
  • $5 – advertising and promotion

Do you accept collaboration entries?

Collaboration entries are allowed, but a single person may only enter one category twice, whether as part of a team or solo.

A maximum of three names will be allowed on any entry form for collaboration.

How do I become a judge?

After some counsel from our legal team and feedback from growers, we’ve made some updates to the judging process.

We have curated a select group of experienced cultivators and industry folks to judge this competition, in order to ensure the highest standard of judging. We’ve made this change after getting some great feedback from the Vermont growing community.

If you don’t get to judge, then join us for the Headies Awards Party on Saturday, January 12! This will be a ticketed, 21+, private and members-only event. You’ll get to sample away at some of the best flower and products Vermont cultivators have to offer.

Are you accepting CBD entries?

This is a THC-only competition, except for the CBD flower category. However, we welcome THC/CBD blends for edibles and topicals.

May I both enter AND judge?

Yes. All judging will be done blind, and we’ll ensure that you won’t be judging your own stuff.

Can I enter in multiple categories?

You may enter in multiple categories if you wish, but must pay the entry fee for each one at time of dropoff.

Can I enter multiple products in the same category?

Yes, but not more than two.

Are there any rules about where my entry has to come from?

All of your cannabis and cannabis-derived materials must be from Vermont. We’re not so concerned about, say, your coconut oil.

How do I get the Headies Entry Kit for my concentrates or flower?

You may stop by Heady offices at 208 Flynn Avenue #2J during regular business hours (M-F 10am-6pm) to pick up your kit for free anytime after October 31. We prefer that you pack up your entry in advance, but you may also pack it up during Registration and Dropoff if absolutely necessary.

What do you need to know about my edibles or topicals?

You must list your ingredients for each entry on the registration form, as well as a 50-word description of the effects.

We will include this information for the judges with each of your entry samples. The judges will compare your description against their actual experience.

How will the entries be scored?

The entries will be scored on both Qualitative and Quantitative criteria.

Qualitative:

  • Aroma
  • Taste
  • Visual Aesthetics
  • Stone/High
  • Burnability/Flush.

Quantitative:

  • Flower: THC and CBD levels.
  • Concentrate: THC and CBD levels, and residual solvents (RS).

NOTE: We are only accepting concentrate without solvents this year, and the score is Pass/Fail. Any hash and rosin with detected chemical solvents will be disqualified.

  • Edibles: THC, CBD, and THC-A levels.

NOTE: We also score the ratio of what is listed on package versus the actual THC/CBD levels reported by the lab.

How Many Judges Are There?

Each entry will be judged by no less than 10 different qualified judges.

We have curated a select group of experienced cultivators and industry folks to judge this competition, in order to ensure the highest standard of judging. We’ve made this change after getting some great feedback from the Vermont growing community.

Disqualifications

Heady Vermont reserves the right to disqualify entries for any rules violation, and in cases where HVT deems the entry, or practices of the competitor, to be against the spirit of fair competition.

Entries that have been adulterated with non-cannabis derived products will be disqualified.

Entries made with cannabis or cannabis-sourced products not grown in Vermont will be disqualified.

Entries that have high incidents of mold, bacteria, or pesticides – as identified either by the competition committee or our partner labs – will be privately disqualified and the competitors immediately notified.

NOTE: HVT is not out to publicly embarrass any of our competitors. These rules are solely in place for the safety and welfare of our judges and the community at large. Disqualifications will be privately handled between HVT and competitors, and will not be made public.

HVT does not offer refunds in the event of a disqualification.

Packaging Your Entries

Flower

Using our Heady Flower Entry Kit (available for free), separate your one-ounce (28-grams) entry into twelve (12) 1-gram increments. Place the 1-gram increments in our standard issue jars. Place the remainder in a container of your choice. We will need to inspect each entry before sealing and processing.

Then place all jars into the large bag/container, and fill in the outside with your entry info – which should correspond to your registration form.

Concentrates

Using our Heady Concentrates Entry Kit (available for free), separate your quarter ounce (7-grams) entry into fourteen (14) ½-gram increments.

The ½ gram increments of Hash or Rosin must each be separated and placed into the 14 small jars. DO NOT LABEL THE SMALL JARS.

Then place all jars into the large larger bag/envelope, and fill in the outside with your entry info – which should correspond to your registration form.

Edibles

Please provide 15 individually packaged and unlabeled samples, each equaling one serving size, for entries in the Edibles category. If your edible requires refrigeration, please bring it in a cooler.

Your containers must follow our edibles labeling guidelines, and be stored in a larger bag or container. You may label your OUTSIDE container.

Topicals

Please provide 15 individually packaged serving size samples for entries in the Topicals category. Your containers must follow our topicals labeling guidelines, and be stored in a larger bag or container. You may label your OUTSIDE container with your identifying information.

Please do NOT label the individual bags in your entry, as judging is conducted blind and removing these labels creates more work for us.
