CannaCurious: Meet Heady Vermont’s New Editor

Rob Williams 4 May 2018

Hello, Heady readers!

Rob Williams, Heady Vermont’s new editor, at your service.

By way of introduction, here is my two minute testimony in support of cannabis legalization, delivered to members of the Vermont state legislature’s “2016 cannabis listening tour” held at the University of Vermont two years ago.

“My name is Rob Williams.

I live in Waitsfield, Vermont.

I am a UVM professor, father of two teenage kids, publisher of Vermont Independent news journal, and a member of the Vermont Cannabis Collaborative (VTCC) and the Health and Impact Assessment research team that released their Vermont Department of Health cannabis report this week.

I have never used cannabis, and don’t plan to in the future, but after 18 months of sustained study and conversation with Vermonters all over our state about cannabis, I am a firm supporter of a phased in, thoughtful legislative approach to cannabis legalization – the creation of a taxed, regulated, legalized cannabis economy.

I urge our Vermont state legislature to support the will of the majority of Vermonters, who recognize three essential truths:

1. Cannabis use is alive and well in Vermont, and will continue to be, regardless of what our state legislature decides.

2. Cannabis prohibition in Vermont has been a complete failure.

3. We in Vermont have an opportunity to get our relationship to cannabis right. A phased-in, legislated approach to a legalized, taxed, and regulated cannabis economy is a far better option for the health and safety of Vermonters, as well as the economic vitality of Vermont, than the continuation of a failed prohibition model, especially as Canada and many of our neighboring states look to legalize in the very near future.”

So much hemp and cannabis-related activity has unfolded in Vermont since I spoke these words in UVM Davis Center’s Grand Maple Ballroom two short years ago. And yet, like many in our HEADY community, I feel like we are just warming up.

I’ll be writing this Heady “CannaCurious” column for anyone interested in learning more about the history, politics, culture and the many applications of hemp and cannabis, both here in Vermont and globally. Beyond the faithful, those who are well versed in the use of MJ for either medical or recreational reasons, is a much larger community interested in learning more. This column is for you.

Looking forward to our Heady adventures ahead.
