How to Get High — And Get Shit Done
One of the most common misconceptions about pot smokers is that they are lazy hippie burnouts. But as we all know, this is far from the truth. There are plenty of successful, smart people that love to get high. Athletes, doctors, teachers, and people of many other walks of life enjoy the benefits of cannabis for relaxation, pain, and more. You can be active in more ways than one and not only enjoy cannabis, but use it as a tool for focus and enjoyment. From goal-setting to exercising, here are eight ways to get high and still get shit done.
Set An Intention Or Goal First.
Set your intentions or goals first before reaching for that bong. If you actually intend to get shit done, you need to decide what you’ll be doing and prep before you elevate yourself. Think of it as manifesting your goals.
Choose a Strain That Fits the Project.
Are you brainstorming? Exercising? Doing housework? With a bit of research and basic terpene knowledge, you can choose a strain that’s conducive to the project at hand.
Sativa-dominant strains are often recommended for creativity, as they are generally more energizing and promote productivity. Indica-dominant strains may be sedating. However, these are generalities, and it is more likely that any variety that combines THC, CBD, and terpenes like limonene (mood), pinene (memory), and beta-caryophyllene will have more uplifting effects.
Smoke – But Not On The Couch!
I believe that chores are most enjoyable when high, but if I smoke weed while already sitting on the couch, they’ll never get done—because as soon as that good shit kicks in, I forget what I was doing and get sucked into whatever’s on the tube. My solution is to get my chore “set up” (i.e. bring the vacuum out, move all the furniture, put on a good piece of vinyl), and then hit the bong one time right before diving in.
Get Started, Then Get High.
Alternately, if you don’t have great confidence in your self-control when it comes to doing things on weed, get started on your activity or project first. Then take a quick break after 15 minutes and reward yourself for getting things in motion!
Love Coffee? Get A Boost From A Hippie Speedball
The caffeine-cannabis combo is also called a “hippie speedball” due to its reputation for inspiring high performance. For years, action sports athletes have been using the combination of exercise, coffee and cannabis as a performance-enhancing chemical. And get this: the neurochemicals that are present when you know you’re in the “flow”—dopamine, anandamide, serotonin, and endorphins—also show up with a hippie speedball.
Get High Immediately Before Exercise
Unless I’m doing something like yoga, where I want a completely clear mind, I find it helpful to preface a challenging exercise session by adding a little purple haze to my mental state. Think of it as a much-need attitude adjustment in the face of laziness. Go ahead and get dressed for that run/hike/walk/at-home-gym session, and then hit the weed once or twice right before you begin the workout.
Moderation and Microdosing
Microdosing with cannabis is a good place to start for pretty much any endeavor. For something creative like music or writing, try taking an abbreviated hit of a joint or just one toke of the bong for every 45 minutes of activity. Prefer edibles? Eat some low dose gummies to take the edge off.
Another element to explore, especially for more physical pursuits, is choosing strains that are higher in CBD content and lower in THC, so you can utilize more of the effects in the body. This is also a great option for those who feel anxiety from high-THC strains.
Cannabis As a Reward for Productivity
Even if you aren’t yet skilled at using weed to help you get through certain tasks, relaxing with the herb afterward can feel like a special treat and gift to yourself, closing the productivity loop and giving you something to work toward.
